Eureka- Phillip E. "Phil" McCanless, 82, of Eureka, IL
passed away at 8:35 am on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the Eureka
Apostolic Christian Home where he was a resident. He was born on
June 8, 1929 in Poteau, OK a son of John William and Ola Bennett
McCanless. He married Betty Kent in August of 1958. He later
married Wilma Blackmore in 1983 in Poteau, OK. She passed away on
March 9, 2010.
Surviving are three sons, Tim L. McCanless of East Chicago, IN;
Kent P. McCanless of Eureka, IL; Christopher K. McCanless of
Martinsville, IN; one daughter, Raven A. Stirling of Boulder, CO;
and one grandson, Morgan Stirling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one
brother.
Phillip worked at Cilco for 33 years. He was a part-time Eureka
Police Officer and had managed the Woodford Theater in Eureka.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served during the
Korean War.
He was a member of the William C. Hobbs Masonic Lodge in Eureka,
a volunteer firefighter in Eureka, and a Eureka City Council
alderman for 18 years. Phillip's fondest memory was of meeting
governor Ronald Reagan and working with the security detail. He was
an avid Ronald Reagan fan and enjoyed spending winters in Sarasota,
FL.
He attended the Eureka Apostolic Christian Church where funeral
services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 26, 2012. Church
ministers will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9-9:45 am on
Saturday at the church before the service. Burial will be in the
Roanoke Apostolic Christian Cemetery.
Phil's family would like to thank the entire staff for their
love and unconditional care while he resided at the nursing
home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
Eureka Apostolic Christian Home or the Shriner's Hospital for
